RESEARCH

My research interests are primarily in clinical Reproductive Medicine. I have been awarded the degree of M.D. by Bristol University for my work entitled ‘The aetiopathogenesis of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women undergoing assisted conception’. The process of doing my M.D. has allowed me to gain experience in planning and conducting studies and critically evaluating data and literature. Work from my M.D. has been published in peer-reviewed journals and has been presented at several learned conferences (see below). I am a co-applicant in an NIHR-funded randomised controlled trial on the management of OHSS entitled STOP-OHSS. I have experience of supervising junior colleagues in carrying out clinical research projects which have been presented to learned conferences.

MANAGEMENT AND CLINICAL LEADERSHIP

I have a deep interest in medical management and the pursuit of clinical excellence by individuals and institutions. Soon after my appointment as consultant I completed a course for Senior Clinical Leaders, designed to support the development of leadership skills among clinicians in Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust. In 2012 I completed the NHS Clinical Leaders Network Eminent Leaders leadership development programme. This approached the subject from a foundation of psychological performance theory and included modules on Understanding your leadership style, Changing leadership behaviours, Long-term planning and Debriefing.

I was Clinical Director for Gynaecology in Addenbrooke’s Hospital for 3 years (April 2009 – June 2012). In this role I was responsible for ensuring clinical effectiveness in Gynaecology. My role included both the operational working of the Gynaecology Division and contributing to its strategic plans. As ‘first among equals’ among 12 gynaecologists, I led the division in delivering operational targets, efficiencies and service reconfiguration. I had overall responsibility for ensuring evidence-based guidelines and protocols and effective clinical audit. I supported the introduction of a robust, open clinical governance culture which has developed and matured over the years into an excellent resource for improving patient safety and quality of care. I carried out appraisal and job planning for consultant colleagues.
